Week 3

Learner Profile

One of the main focuses of Instructional Technology is the idea of individualized learning. In order for it to be a chance of that happening, it's important to know who your learners are. I must remember that I am not teaching to a group, but to groups of individuals. With that being said, I am basing my design plan from the Dick and Carey Systems Approach model.
Issue: Currently the curriculum taught in the District ABC does not implement technology and should begin to shift more to a learner-centered styled instruction. A workshop will be provided to teach ways to begin this shift.

The learners of this workshop will be District ABC Middle and High Schools. These individuals range from various ages and experience in the classroom. Whether learners have received trainings that provide ways to shift to a learner-centered styled classroom is unknown, yet teachers from District ABC are graded on use of technology in classroom by administration. This workshop will require learners to pull from their current teaching methods and will be encouraged to share various methods and ideas with each other throughout the academic year.

According to the model a few factors to consider when analyzing the learner include:
  • Cognitive abilities of the learner.
  • Previous experiences of the learner.
  • Motivation.
  • Personal learning style.
  • Clarity of the message.
  • Interaction with the learning environment.
I need to also consider the behaviors of the learner, their prior knowledge, learner’s attitudes, motivation, and of course their individual learning styles. In District ABC there are many teachers who quite possibly could be opposed to this training due to their many years of success in teaching; therefore, I will have need to acknowledge these issue from the beginning in order to have an open mind from all learners.

  1. Sophie, one way that you could get an idea of whether the teachers you are designing for have familiarity with learner-centered instruction is to look at the STaR charts for those schools. You can find those at http://starchart.epsilen.com/ Click on the "Campus STaR" link on the left navigation menu and then search for the schools in your district. :-)
